Introduction to Helpful Hints - first helpful hint; SSID

Introducing, "Helpful Hints."  This will allow you to better understand what some concepts, acronyms, or other points having to do with computers are all about!

Today's Helpful Hint; SSID

SSID

  • What is SSID? Service Set Identifier, or SSID, is a name that identified a particular 802.11 wireless LAN (local area network).
  • Can I find out more about SSID?  Yes.  A "client device" receives broadcast messages from all access points within range advertising their SSIDs.  The client device then either manually or automatically - based on configuration - select the network with which to associate.  The SSID can be up to 32 characters long.  As the SSID displays to users, it normally consists of human-readable characters.  However, the standard does not require this.  The SSID is defined as a sequence of 1-32 octets, each of which may take any value.

    Facebook viruses

It has been a while since the last post on our blog.  I just wanted to share with you a resolution that may work for you.

The first thing you should do is **change your password!**  A lot of the time that stops the Facebook virus "in its tracks.." We have to remember that, for the most part, a Facebook virus is actually a "Trojan" which attacks your Facebook account. A trojan is typically classified as a virus.  I have had my doubts if it truly a virus, based on the characteristics of a virus!

Phasing out of Internet Explorer and other browsers

We received this email from Google this morning.  It does not surprise us whatsoever that Google will be phasing out support for other browser versions, namely Internet Explorer!

    Dear Google Apps admin,

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology.  This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5.  As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010.  After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.

Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Starting this week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs and the Google Sites editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser.  We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.

In 2009, the Google Apps team delivered more than 100 improvements to enhance your product experience.  We are aiming to beat that in 2010 and continue to deliver the best and most innovative collaboration products for businesses.

Thank you for your continued support!

    Sincerely,

    The Google Apps team

Google's entry into the wireless market

Charlie Stross has a blog post up that tries to make sense of the mobile phone market and where it's going: where Apple, Google, and the cellcos fit in, and what the point of Google's Nexus One may be."Becoming a pure bandwidth provider is every cellco's nightmare: it levels the playing field and puts them in direct competition with their peers, a competition that can only be won by throwing huge amounts of capital infrastructure at their backbone network. So for the past five years or more, they've been doing their best not to get dragged into a game of beggar-my-neighbor, by expedients such as exclusive handset deals... [Google intends] to turn 3G data service (and subsequently, LTE) into a commodity, like Wi-Fi hotspot service only more widespread and cheaper to get at. They want to get consumers to buy unlocked SIM-free handsets and pick cheap data SIMs. They'd love to move everyone to cheap data SIMs rather than the hideously convoluted legacy voice stacks maintained by the telcos; then they could piggyback Google Voice on it, and ultimately do the Google thing to all your voice messages as well as your email and web access. (This is, needless to say, going to bring them into conflict with Apple. ... Apple are an implicit threat to Google because Google can't slap their ads all over [the App and iTunes stores]. So it's going to end in handbags at dawn... eventually.)"

    The DROID by Motorola

There's not much to say about the Droid except for the fact that, in our opinion, it is probably one of the best, if not THE best PDA/Smartphones on the market today. It may be the new "computer" of the future in a small form factor. Picture this: an HDMI connection from your Droid. How about a keyboard attachment from the Droid (and mouse of course).

Being the fact that it is such a great device, we wonder why is it such a great device out of the starting gate.

The answer is simple: The OS (operating system) is written by GOOGLE!! From what we've seen there are some pretty clever software produced by GOOGLE, and, if Chrome does make its debut as a true OS as it is supposed to, it would not be surprising that future updates and new generations of the Droid will have a light version or a full version of Google Chrome. Bravo GOOGLE!
